Porch Columns Information

Is it time to renovate your porch? Why not include porch columns in your design?

Porch columns will make your porch look more finished. They will also make your porch more interesting. And, porch columns can pull together architectural motifs that exist throughout your home.

From what styles of porch columns can you choose? There are so many styles available that you are sure to find at least one to your liking. You can choose styles that resemble those from ancient Greece to bring a classical feeling to your home. Porch columns in these styles might have fluting, or grooves, running vertically up the columns’ shafts. They might have stylized leaves on their capitals, or tops. Or, the capitals might include paired scrolls. If these types of porch columns are not to your liking, you might choose “simple” porch columns with square shafts, square bases, and square capitals.

Porch columns today are made from many different materials, such as wood, fiberglass, or composite stone. If you choose your porch columns to be made out of wood, you will have to periodically stain or paint them to protect them from the elements. However, wood porch columns are preferred by many for their natural look and feel. If you choose “new” materials for your porch columns like fiberglass or composite stone, your porch columns will be relatively maintenance free, impervious to insects such as carpenter ants and termites, and will be weather resistant.
